Have you heard the news? The sport Pickleball is growing rapidly, and increasing in popularity in Fresno and surrounding areas, and around the world. Because the sport is so new, there are many players but not a lot of courts to play. Because there are so many players and limited areas to play Pickleball, tennis courts are now being transitioned to pickle ball courts. Because it would take over tennis courts completely to transform courts to pickleball courts, existing tennis courts are being split into two pickleball courts, adding a different set of lines to existing tennis courts so we can share the courts, to facilitate the still high number of tennis players in the community. Today we're having to share the Tennis courts with pickleball courts in order to facilitate both needs. This is causing major problems with availability of courts, so the demand for pickleball courts are high and the supply is low, the demands are not being met.
Have you ever played Pickleball? Have you ever played pickleball outside in the heat? You sure can, but when temperatures are over 100 degrees it is not only miserable, but also sometimes dangerous. Without shade and proper hydration it could be fatal. Have you ever played pickleball in the rain? How about Pickleball in winds over 7 mph? You can't, not only is it slippery and dangerous, but when the winds are high above 7 Miles an hour, it will push the ball in unknown directions and make it harder and harder to play the game.

Youth Engagement
In today's digital age, children and teenagers are spending an increasing amount of time on screens, which has raised concerns about the potential negative effects on their physical and mental health. In 2018, the Kaiser Permanente Family Foundation reported that children aged 8-18 spent a whopping average of 7.5 hours per day on screens for entertainment. This statistic did not account for screen time spent on school or for homework purposes either. In recent years, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, that
number has unfortunately increased. As the following chart from market research firm Statista indicates, teenage girls spend an average of eight hours per day on entertainment screen time while boys spend more than nine.
This phenomenon has raised concerns about the negative effects on youth physical and mental health. According to experts at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, prolonged screen time can lead to "Tech or Text Neck," a condition characterized by neck and back pain resulting from constantly looking down at devices. Dr. Gregory Hahn, the division chair of orthopedic surgery, notes that such habits can lead to neck arthritis over time, potentially requiring surgical intervention. Furthermore, excessive screen time can have psychological setbacks. Too much screen time can lead to higher levels of depression in children. Moreover, excessive screen time can lead to social withdrawal, preventing teens from engaging with their peers in meaningful ways. The increasing reliance on screens underscores the urgent need to promote real-life activities that foster physical fitness, mental health, and social bonding. Engaging in physical activities not only combats the sedentary lifestyle associated with prolonged screen use but also offers numerous health benefits, including improved cardiovascular health, enhanced mood, and better cognitive function. Moreover, participating in group activities and sports like pickleball can facilitate social interactions, helping children and teenagers develop essential interpersonal skills. As the digital world continues to expand, it is imperative to strike a balance between online and offline worlds, ensuring that the younger generation grows up healthy, both physically and mentally. Physical activity has been linked to improved cognitive development in children. According to the CDC, physical
activity builds strong muscles and bones, reduces obesity, reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression, and reduces the risk of terrible conditions like cancer, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and other conditions. Engaging in activities that challenge the body can improve concentration, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
